Learning objectives

The Theoretical Mechanics course is an applied mathematics course, the link between the pure mathematics courses (Mathematical Analysis and Geometry) ad of engineering contents (expecially Structural Mechanics). The main objective of the course is to rigorously provide the basis of Kinematics, Statics and Dynamics, necessary to consciously and critically to learn the courses that characterize the Civil and Ambient Engineering degree.

Prerequisites

Course unit content

Basic concepts of Kinematics, Statics and Dynamics of the mechanical systems.

Full programme

Theory of free vectors - geometry of plane curves - kinematics of the element and of the rigid body - rigid motions acts - relative kinematics - plane rigid motions - mechanics of the element - cardinal equations - theory of the applied vectors - mechanics of rigid bodies - mechanics of articulate systems - virtual works principle.

Bibliography

As well the duplicated lecture notes provided by the lecturer, the following texts are recommended: P.G.Bordoni "Lezioni di Meccanica Razionale" - P.Biscari,T.Ruggeri,G.Saccomandi,M.Vianello "Meccanica Razionale per l'Ingegneria" - G.Frosali,E.Minguzzi,"Meccanica Razionale per l'Ingegneria" P.Benvenuti e G:Maschio "Complementi ed esercizi di Meccanica Razionale".

Teaching methods

The course consists of lectures, of which a significant proportion (almost half) will be devoted to practical work. This consists of mechanical examples and exercises that are designed to illustrate and apply the concepts presented in the theoretical part of the course. The same type of exercises are proposed in the written examination.

Assessment methods and criteria

The exam consists of a written examination and subsequent oral examination. In some cases (the details of which will be outlined to the students during the lessons) the oral examination can be replaced by a second short written test having theoretical subject.
