Learning objectives
At the end of the Course students:
1. will know the major bibliographic sources.
2. will be able to perform queries on the most used electronic sources (catalogues,
bibliographic data banks with particular emphasis on PubMed).
3. will be able to get the original documents in electronic or hard copy format,
evaluating economic and practical issues.

Tools for bibliographic research
Catalogues and bibliographic data banks: what they are,
what is their
u s e f u l n e s s .
The caralogues:
queries in OPAC, OPAC structure, query methods.
Electronic periodicals:
What they are, How to use them.
SFX catalogue of electronic periodicals.
Bibliographic data banks.
Principles and structure of an electronic bibliographic data bank. Medline:
Record structure, Index rules.
Use of PubMed for electronic queries.
Query software, language, and synthaxis: Boolean operators.
Query language: free query and use of thesaurus.

Interactive oral lessons with exercises (with the support of an expert in biblioteconomy)
Assessment methods and criteria
Multiple choice tests (30): some aimed at assessing knowledge of the bibliographic sources, some aimed to ascertain the capability to choose the more appropriate source and to use it. 1 mark for each correct answer, -0.5 mark for each wrong/blank answer.
