Learning objectives

The first goal (I Dublin descriptor – acquiring knowledge and understanding) is to achieve a basic knowledge level on the subject.
The second one (II Dublin descriptor– applying knowledge and understanding) aims to stimulate knowledge upgrade, also adopting personal student initiatives, in order to improve the capability to apply the gained knowledge.
The third one (III Dublin descriptor – making informed judgments and choices) is represented by the attainment of a critical skill able to manage every passive bioclimatic design choice, necessary to start up a thesis on a topic of technology of architecture.

Course unit content

This section gives the opportunity for learning an important and topical technological design issue: the achievement of energy saving and indoor comfort according to the empowerment of the passive behaviour of building envelope. As the envelope is the part of building where the main energy indoor-outdoor exchanges occur, it represents the fundamental site in which to experiment innovation and to apply traditional bioclimatic principles respecting the technological evolution.
The section is an autonomous short course to focus on the bioclimatic design elements and the passive technological system of the building envelope.

The lessons concern:
• Direct, indirect and detached Passive Heating Systems
• Direct, indirect and detached Passive Cooling Systems
• Short anthology of study cases and appropriate technologies
• Environmental performance evaluations
• Energy Balance and passive bioclimatic systems

Teaching methods

The section is organized on lectures and workshops to study in deep a few topical cases or to design a new one. The workshops phase will be held during the second semester and it will be managed by professor and tutors, one time every two weeks. It is articulated in subsequent steps and it ended with a final students seminar in which they explain the results of their research.

Assessment methods and criteria

It ended with a final students seminar in which they explain the results of their research.
