Learning objectives
The objective of the Clinical Microbiology course is to enable the acquisition of knowledge and understanding about the fundamental biological characteristics, replication and interaction with the host of relevant bacteria, fungi, and viruses of medical interest, and about the basic aspects related to the laboratory diagnosis, either direct or indirect, of infections. Objective of the course is also to provide the ability to apply in occupational contexts the knowledge and understanding acquired in the field of Clinical Microbiology.
Prerequisites
Getting through examination of microbiology for the first year of the course.

BACTERIOLOGY
Normal flora in humans
General characters (morphology, cell structures, notes on metabolism),
pathogenicity and main diagnostic aspects related to the following human bacterial pathogens:
Staphylococci: S. aureus and other coagulase-negative Staphylococci
Streptococci: S. pyogenes, S. agalactiae, S. pneumoniae and Enterococci
Corynebacteria
Neisseriaceae: N. meningitidis and N. gonorrhoeae
Enteric pathogens, Vibrio cholerae, and Campylobacter
Pseudomonas aeruginosa
Haemophilus influenzae
Listeria
Legionella
Bordetella pertussis

Lectures accompanied by visual aids will be used to convey critical information on the topics relating to the course content.
Assessment methods and criteria
Learning outcomes will be verified through an oral examination. Questions on the topics relating to the course content will be used to test the student’s knowledge and understanding in the field, and her/his ability to apply the knowledge and understanding in occupational contexts.
