Learning objectives

The main objective of the course is to provide the students with the essential notions on the structure and function of the complex biomolecules. Of these molecules the student is required to know the fundamental metabolic pathways and regulation.

Course unit content

Properties of solutions and concentration units, stoichiometric calculations. Acids and bases, pH concept; calculating the pH of various aqueous solutions; buffer solutions.
Basic principles of Organic Chemistry. Main characteristics of the following compounds: hydrocarbons, alcohols, aldehydes and ketones, carboxylic acids and derivatives, amines.
Biological Macromolecules: aminoacids and proteins, carbohydrates, lipids.
Introduction to the metabolism: basic concepts of catabolism and anabolism.
