Learning objectives
Formative objectives: the course aims to provide students with the basic instruments for a good knowledge of both national and global contemporary history and also to open new perspectives for research.
Knowledge and understanding: the teaching of Contemporary History enable students with a critical understanding of the subject.
Applying knowledge and understanding: as a basic education, the aim is to ensure that students arrive at their own minimum elements of knowledge, in view of further investigation.
Making judgments: at the end of the course students should have acquired the ability to collect data, to interpret critically the historical evolution and to formulate independent and self-motivated judgments on the socio-political context in which they occur.
Communication skills: At the end of the course, students should have achieved the ability to communicate clearly the main problems of European history.
Learning skills: the study of the subject should provide students with a certain methodological mastery and learning skills also useful for the access to future professions related to teaching and communication.

Course unit content
The course is divided into two parts:
1. History of Europe and Italy in the 20th Century, with particular attention to the First World War in Europe and to the republican period in Italy.
2. The mark of Cain and Abel's sacrifice. Lager, genocide and Righteous in the history of the 20th century: the concentration camp system developed in various countries (notably the Soviet Gulag) and the most well-known genocides (Armenians, Jews, Roma and Sinti, Cambodia, Rwanda, Bosnia, etc.), the problem of 'Righteous' with exemplary biographies, seeking general categories of interpretation.

Teaching methods
Teaching method: the teaching consists of lectures with computer science aid (each lesson is presented with Power Point slides).
Assessment methods and criteria
Learning check method: written and oral. The written examination is preliminary and consists of a test of the basic knowledge of the nineteenth and twentieth centuries history. The written examination is required for Letters students only. Both general and specific questions will be asked in order to meet the set formative objectives.
