Integrated course unit module: SOCIAL NEUROSCIENCE

Learning objectives

Students will achieve updated information on the basic aspects of the mirror system, in particular on those concerning action comprehension, imitation and coding of others' intentions. Furthermore it will be shown how the properties of the mirror system can be applied to motor rehabilitation.

Prerequisites

Knowledge of the fundamental properties of the motor and visual systems

Course unit content

Brief introduction to higher order motor functions. The mirror neuron system in non-human primates: main properties. The audio-visual and communicative mirror neurons. The mirror system for action understanding in humans. Imitation. Intention coding. Plasticity of the mirror sytem. Rehabilitation techniques based on action observation in adults and children.
