Learning objectives
The final examination aims at verifying the ability of the candidate to work independently, and to masterfully present and discuss the results of an original research project on a specific topic, involving experimental work.
Prerequisites
To be admitted to the final examination, students must have completed all the exams or, in any case, have obtained all the learning credits laid down in their teaching regulations for activities other than the final examination. In addition, students must present three seminars aimed at verifying the progress made during the thesis project.
Course unit content
The final examination consists of defending a degree project. The dissertation, written in Italian (with an extended abstract in English) or in English (with an extended abstract in Italian), is the outcome of a research activity carried out by the student that correspond to 24 ECTS credits, i.e. 600 hours of study and work in preference spread over 6-8 months. The final examination is combined with the internship of 3 ECTS credits.

Teaching methods
The final dissertation deals with an experimental work, preferably with an interdisciplinary approach, that can be condurted in a university laboratory or in approved institutions or entreprises. The thesis project is performed under the supervision of a professor, who can also be assisted by one or more experts on the selected topic.
Assessment methods and criteria
The dissertation must be discussed publicly. It is evaluated by a board composed at least of five members, professors of the degree programme or experts on the thesis subject, all of whom appointed by the director of the Department of chemistry, life sciences and environmental sustainability.
The final grades are calculated from the weighted average scores of the exams passed during the academic career (admission grades) plus the grades assigned to the thesis; the latter are proposed by the supervisor (up to 5 marks) and by the board (up to 3 marks), also considering the results of the three seminars. The board expresses its evaluation with a score out of one hundred and ten. Graduation honors (lode) can be proposed by the supervisor and unanimously awarded by the board only to students having admission grades no less than 102/110 and, as a general rule, at least four full marks with distinction (30 e lode), or for other exceptional circumstances agreed by the board.
