Learning objectives


The course allows the student to understand what are the elements of social service, learning to recognize her historical and cultural roots and her evolutions.
Integration with other theories and professions will support the connection between theory and social practice that have contributed to the development of a unitary methodological process.
Particular attention will be given to the theme of emerging needs and problems as well as the emotional dimension of the profession. The course aims to make students acquire knowledge and comprehension skills in relation to the following topics:

The main national and international definitions of Social Services
The elements constituting the identity of the social service as a profession and as discipline
The history of social service
The epistemological and deontological bases of the profession in a trifocal perspective
The main theoretical orientations and operating models with particular attention to the new generation social behavioral theories
Relational dimensions in the interview of help
Knowledge and comprehension skills:
The student should reach aextensive knowledge  of the topics discussed during the course and be able touse consciously and critically the acquired notions.
Applications of Knowledge and comprehension:
 The student must be able to establishing connections between concepts and the content of various texts and being comfortable with specialist language.
Taking into account the professional importance of writing, formal correctness in writing is included a among the expected results, in line with the university educational level.

The course is developed through six thematic areas:

1. Elements characterizing social service: from the social phenomena of poverty and marginality from which it originates, to its main functions and areas of intervention in a trifocal perspective.
2. Social service in history through the narrative of professional life of Italian and Anglo-Saxon pioneers and current collocation in the social context
3. Values ​​and principles of social service inspiration
4. Deontological dimension of profession and professional identity construction
5. Theoretical and epistemological bases of social service
6. Building professional skills with particular attention to attitudes and managing the emotional dimension within the interview

Frontal lessons, using interactive modes, plenary discussions, group work, and individual processing

Assessment methods and criteria

At the beginning of the course, the teacher will check the previous knowledge of the students.
The Examination is written and it is divided into two parts: the first consists will consist of 24 open-ended or multiple-choice questions in cross-stitches, aimed at checking knowledge; the second part of 3 open questions designed to discover the ability to apply knowledge and understanding and to develop reasoning based on the logical connection of the concepts which have been acquired.
The examination lasts for 70 minutes. 100 minutes for Erasmus Students. Each answer is worth a point. Open answer questions are worth two points and will be evaluated according to the following criteria: relevance of the answer, synthesis capacity, clarity in the display and grammatical correctness (syntax and vocabulary).

In order to take the second year exam, the student must have passed the following first year exams:

2 Institutions of public law and social legislation
3 Family law and minorities

Students are expected to be accepted (by appointment or by contact at the end of the lesson or by mail) every Friday from 17:30 to 18:30
