Learning objectives

Aim of the course is to provide the
fundamentals for the design and the safety assessment of steel and masonry structures.
The student at the end of the curse will acquire the following skill:
- to know the principles for the verification of structures and members;
- to know actions on structures and environment influences;
- to know the fundamentals concerning the mechanical behaviour of steel and masonry structures;
- knowledge of structural dimensioning of steel and members according to Italian and European codes;
- to govern the conceptual design of structures to optimise the relation between the architectonical shape and the structural performances;
- to show enhanced communication skill using the technical terminology currently adopted in the daily practice

Prerequisites

The preparatory exam of Structural Analysis is strongly recommended.

Course unit content

Structural Engineering (Module I) helps the student to know the behaviour of steel and masonry structures. The student learns how to design steel and masonry structures according to theory and Italian and European codes. The student acquires the principles of limit state design according to partial factor method based on elastic and elasto-plastic behaviour of members.

Full programme

The course treats the following topics:
- Structural performances;
- Methodologies for the safety assessment of structures;
- Actions on structures (self-weight, permanent loads of non-structural elements, imposed loads, seismic actions, wind action snow load, accidental actions)
- Steel structures (mechanical properties, conceptual design and overall behaviour, structural analysis of frame and braced frame buildings, truss systems, instability and resistance evaluation of members at ultimate limit state, serviceability limit state verifications, verification of bolted and welded joints, detailing rules);
- Masonry structures (mechanical properties, conceptual design and overall behaviour, structural analysis of masonry buildings, ultimate limit state verifications of masonry members, detailing rules).

The teaching material, notes, slides and additional documentation will be available via the portal “Elly DIA” (https://elly.dia.unipr.it).

Teaching methods

The course alternates lessons (where the theoretical fundamentals are explained) and practice exercises (where the fundamental are applied to case studies). The 4 credits of the Module I correspond to 40 hours of lessons.
All the adopted slides will be weekly uploaded to Elly platform. For the slide download the student needs to register to the online course. The slides must be considered part of the teaching material.

The teacher is available for further explanations by appointment via mail.

Assessment methods and criteria

The evaluation of student learning is characterised by a written exam and an oral exam.
1) During the written exam the student has to prove:
- be able to evaluate internal stresses in a steel or masonry structure subjected to external actions,
- be able to design/verify a steel member;
- be able to design/verify a masonry member.
The written exam is 3 hour long. The grade ranges from 0 to 30.
2) During the oral exam the student has to describe the main steps of the written examination. Furthermore, during the oral examination, the student demonstrates his learning level about the theoretical fundamentals for the dimensioning, design and safety assessment of steel and masonry structures.
The grade of the oral exam ranges from 0 to 30.
The final mark is the average of written and oral exam grade values.
Mark with honours are assigned if the maximum grade is reached for each item and if the student demonstrates his speaking skill characterised by the use of an appropriate technical language.

Online registration for the appeal is COMPULSORY both for the written and the oral exam.

Other information

The attendance to lessons and to exercises is strongly recommended for this course.
