Learning objectives

To promote a multidisciplinary and top-down view of product design by stimulating
critical analysis of mechanical devices.
To directly experience team work.
To develop the capability to design, write and present tech reports.
To develop hands-on competence in the use a professional CAD software by using
it within project work.

Course unit content

To introduce methodologies and interdisciplinary skills required in the different
stages of the technical product development and their application in practice.
To present selected topics of machine design.
To present a professional CAD software for modeling and graphical representation
in mechanical engineering.
To develop the graphical and technical reports of mechanical devices.

Full programme

The stages of the development process of a technical product. Typical activities of the design engineer in the manufacturing company. Impact of the international market environment. Role of individual personality in team work. Myers-Briggs personality test. Motivation and dynamics of working teams. Methods to activate creativity and promote product innovation. Patents: Typical structure and objectives of intellectual protection. European legislation in the field of machinery and pressure vessels.Revision and integration of skills acquired during the undergraduate degree in the context of the design of specific commercial products.1) Development of a two-cylinder compressor: Thermodynamic cycle, four bar linkage analysis, dynamic load analysis of components, electric motor drive and belt transmission, structural check of the main components of the compressor, evaluation of Buy or make strategies, cost estimate, design of compressed air tank.2) Development of a hydraulic lift present in the lab. Market survey and analysis of existing solutions. Design requirements. Learning of lift operation and the risks associated with the use. Definition of the lifting mechanism. Identification of buy-make components. Design of the hoist frame by welded metal construction. Design checks of all critical components. Catalog selection of commercial components.Development of technical CAD drawings of individual parts and assembly of the two products. Technical report writing. Simulation of mechanism motion.
