Learning objectives

The goals of the course, in terms of knowledge and comprehension, are the following:
- to give to the students the opportunity to learn how to use simulators and how to program experimental testbeds of telecommunication networks.

The abilities to use the knowledge and comprehension skills outline above can be summarized as follows:
- to analyze the performance of a real telecommunication network.

Prerequisites

Course unit content

Development of lab projects related to the contents of the Network Performance course. The focus will be on the performance analysis of real systems, such as IEEE 802.15.4 or, more generally, Internet of Things (IoT) scenarios. Matlab and proper network simulators (such as Cooja, NS-2/3, Opnet) will be used. The network performance will also be evaluated by using experimental sensor network testbeds.

Full programme

LECTURES 1-3: Theoretical and detailed foundation on the operational principles (from a communication and protocol perspective) of a real example of telecommunication network (such as: IEEE 802.15.4 networks with particular configurations and routing strategies; 6LowPAN networks with particular configurations and routing strategies).

LECTURES 4-6: Detailed overview of the performance analysis tools, such as advanced computational tools (Matlab), simulators (Cooja, NS-2, Opnet), and available experimental testbeds (TinyOS, SunSPOT, Rapsberry Pi, ando others).

LECTURES 7-10: Definition of (single or group) projects and their initial developement.

Bibliography

Recent literature papers related to the performance analysis of sensor networks or Internet of Things (IoT) scenarios, selected at the beginning of the course.
Reference textbooks will be identified throughout the course.

Teaching methods

During the lectures variou topics related to performance analysis of real telecommunication networks, as detailed in the program, will be covered.

Assessment methods and criteria

Project (agreed upon with the teacher) on a topic of the course with final report and discussion of the same.

Other information

The teaching and suppport material will be provided in part by the teacher.
