Learning objectives

Introduce students to the knowledge and understanding of phenomena related to the propagation of electromagnetic waves and their interaction with matter.

Prerequisites

It is advisable for the student to have successfully attended the Electromagnetism course.

Course unit content

<br />Electromagnetic waves: Maxwell equations and wave equation. Plane waves and spherical waves. Electromagnetic waves in dielectrics and in conductors. Conservation of energy and Poynting vector. Classical phenomena of interaction between radiation and matter: reflection and refraction; dispersion of light. Natural light and polarized radiation. Group velocity. Huyghens-Fresnel principle. Interference. Diffraction. Optics of anisotropic bodies; anisotropy of matter; index ellipsoid; Nicol prism and quarter-wave plate. Artificial birefringence. Optical activity. Faraday effect.
