Learning objectives
The students will learn how to read and interpret the results of analytical tests, in order to evaluate any alterations at a metabolic level of the animals in an intensive livestock breeding unit. In addition, students will acquire skills in interpreting the metabolic parameters linked to the nutritional programmes applied, and they will be able to evaluate the suitability of the diet supplied, for the respective livestock situation. This evaluation will be extended to consider the principal nutritional components, such as proteins, carbohydrates, lipids and electrolytes, with regard to the animals' needs.
Prerequisites
Chemistry, biochemistry, physiology, general pathology.
Course unit content
The course comprises the study of stages in livestock monitoring and surveillance, and the determination of the metabolic profile, along with the laboratory parameters involved. In addition, students will learn how to interpret and apply the results of livestock monitoring and surveillance, with particular reference to commercial cattle and pigsThe course comprises the study of the phases of livestock monitoring and surveillance, and of the respective metabolic profiles, along with the laboratory parameters involved. In addition, students have to learn methods of interpreting and applying the results of livestock surveillance, with particular regard to cattle and pig species.

Teaching methods
The course consists of two types of lesson: frontal lessons of theoretical nature; and practical lessons in which notions are applied. In the frontal lessons, students are given the fundamental theoretical notions necessary to construct a metabolic profile according to knowledge of animal metabolism. During the practical lessons, the students work on practical case studies presented by the professor, utilising the theoretical knowledge that they have developed.
