Learning objectives
The aim of the course is to give students the fundamental knowledge on local development to design and implement place-based development policies.
Course unit content
1) The main conceptualisations of local development; 2) The local development as a new paradigm for understanding and planning the national economic development; 3) The main theories of local development; 4) The nature of policies for local development; 5) How national and international institutions can promote local development; 6) The local development in the experience of european and developing countries.

Assessment methods and criteria
Written exam. Assessment is by way of written submissions. Each student is required to submit an essay of approximately 5,000 words. The reference list to be used includes all readings of the Course (see, «Testi di riferimento») together with an article on a linked topic (typically relating to a case study) agreed between teacher and student, according to the interests of the individual.
